Job Full Description:
A local precision machine shop is seeking an experienced Sr. Manufacturing Engineer to lead engineering activities, accurately quote new work, and ensure the successful launch of new parts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in manufacturing engineering, process design, and operational support. This position requires a hands-on approach, deep technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate across teams to optimize production processes and improve overall efficiency.
Senior Manufacturing Engineer Responsibilities:
- Drive competitive and accurate quoting of new work, utilizing the most effective equipment Imperial owns, as well as identifying the best processes for equipment not owned by Imperial (to be purchased or subcontracted).
- Lead the APQP process, ensuring adherence to Imperial's procedures and work instructions for product and process launches.
- Understand external processes (e.g., heat treating, plating) and their impact on part performance, including the ability to adjust tolerances and assist with supplier development.
- Support the creation of process drawings, conformance sheets, set-up sheets/instructions, control plans, PFMEAs, routers, and procurement of industry standards.
- Select and specify the most efficient tools for each operation, factoring in production volume, and determine appropriate speeds, feeds, and lubrication for materials and tools.
- Continuously review methods, standards, and production factors to recommend and implement improvements, including equipment upgrades or replacements for process optimization.
- Provide hands-on technical support to operations, including programming, setting up, and operating equipment as needed.
- Improve equipment layout, process flow, set-up processes, and chip-to-chip time efficiency.
- Provide technical expertise in corrective/preventive action meetings and continuous improvement (CI) efforts.
- Implement lean manufacturing techniques, workplace organization, standardization, 5-S, quick changeover, visual management, and six sigma practices.
- Support the Maintenance function with the adjustment and calibration of equipment, sourcing parts, and assisting with equipment installation and upgrades.
- Safely operate machine shop equipment, including lathes, CNC machines, welders, and other equipment, while instructing others in safe operation.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, depth gauges, calipers, and more to ensure quality and precision in manufacturing.
- Lead by example to ensure compliance with company certifications and promote Imperial’s culture of quality and safety.
- Foster a positive work environment through effective communication with customers, sub-contractors, and co-workers.
Schedule: First shift, Monday - Friday
Job Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of operational/engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Expertise in process design and improvement for CNC mills and lathes (including fixed headstock and Swiss).
- Experience with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems, CNC controls, and PLCs.
- Strong team leadership and delegation skills, with experience working in cross-functional teams.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and SolidWorks.
- Ability to read and interpret prints with and without GD&T principles, and understand equipment capabilities to meet print requirements.
- Advanced problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of MI-OSHA regulations and a strong safety mindset.
- Experience with lean manufacturing, six sigma, 5-S, kaizen, error proofing, and other process improvement methodologies is preferred.
Job Education
College degree in Engineering or a related field.
